Different Types of Loft Conversions

LONDON - England - When looking for a loft conversion, it is best to research the type of loft for your type of property and space requirements.

If you are looking to add more rooms to your living space, but do not want to get an extension, a loft conversion could be the perfect solution for you. Not only will it provide you with a more comfortable living environment, but it can also add value to your property which makes them worth the investment. However, there are different types of loft conversions that you can choose from, so it is important to know what they are, so you can pick the right one for you.

Dormer Loft Conversion

This is a very popular choice with homeowners as a dormer loft conversion can help to add some headroom to your loft, making it a more comfortable space. It is not expensive compared to other choices, and it is suitable for the majority of house styles. A dormer loft conversion will give you flat walls and straight ceilings, as well as providing plenty of light and ventilation in your new attic room.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

A hip to gable loft conversion is often seen in end terraces and detached properties. These types of conversions straighten the inwardly slanted walls at the end of a roof to create a vertical one. It creates a lot more space in your converted loft, which is why it is a fairly popular choice. The only downside to these kinds of loft conversions is that they do not work for mid-terrace properties and can be more expensive to complete than a dormer conversion. Also, if your neighbour does not have one, it can look a bit out of place which makes it slightly less aesthetically pleasing.

Mansard Loft Conversion

Mansard lofts raise the party wall that is shared with your neighbours and your roof will remain flat with an outer wall that slopes gently inwards. They can work well with any property type but are commonly found in terraced properties, and this is because they work well with that style of the house. They can offer more headroom than most other types of conversion and also allow plenty of light into your new loft room. Furthermore, they usually do require planning permission, however, unlike other kinds of conversion and can take longer to finish as well as being more expensive. Roof Light Loft Conversion

This is the most basic type of loft conversion available as you do not alter any of the existing space, you only add windows to the roof for more light and ventilation. The benefits of a roof light loft conversion are that it is the cheapest kind to get, so better for those who are working with smaller budgets. Additionally, it is likely to be approved on most properties, and you can use clever storage to make the room more comfortable.

However, as it does not add any extra headroom it is not as spacious as other types of conversions, so depending on what you want to use this new attic room for, it might not be the most suitable option.

If you are thinking about converting your loft into another liveable room in your home, make sure you have thought carefully about what type of conversion will suit your budget and your needs best.
